On June 2, the “Library on Gazetny” hosted a lecture “From small to medium: The development of entrepreneurship in Russia.” The event, organized by the Gaidar Institute, drew an audience interested in practical mechanisms through which business influences the economy and the current challenges in this field.
The lecturer was Vera Barinova, Candidate of Economic Sciences and Senior Researcher at the Gaidar Institute. The guest speaker was Stepan Zemtsov, Doctor of Economic Sciences and Head of the Development Economics Research Department at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA).
During the discussion, the experts addressed a wide range of issues related to entrepreneurship and its role in the economy. In particular, they discussed who entrepreneurs are and why they need government support. The functions of entrepreneurial activity and the mechanisms through which entrepreneurship influences socio-economic development were also addressed.
Special attention was given to the question of whether entrepreneurial capital influences economic development in Russia. The speakers examined the Russian innovation paradox, which consists of the fact that despite the presence of a large amount of knowledge, skills, and scientific discoveries in the country, there is insufficient output, low labor productivity, and weak commercialization. The speakers also touched on the relationship between entrepreneurship and employment, discussed in which cases support for small and medium-sized enterprises is inappropriate, and analyzed the reasons for the relatively minor role of SMEs in the Russian economy.
The lecture sparked interest among the audience. We thank everyone present for their attention and active participation in the discussion!
