In this short book, Markus Gabriel argues that art is inherently uncontrollable. It is in the nature of a work of art to be autonomous so much that the art world will never be able to overpower it. Since the time of the cave paintings in Lascaux, art has possessed human minds. Thanks to the emergence of art, we have become human beings, that is, beings who live in the light of the image of a human being and his position in the world and in relation to other species. Thanks to its structural, ontological power, art has been and remains radically autonomous. And yet this power is deeply ambiguous, because we are not able to control its action.
In this book, the leading representative of the "new realism" applies such a philosophical view of art to create a new aesthetic realism.
