Presentation of Alasdair MacIntyre’s book “A brief History of Ethics” (1966) will take place on February 9 at 19.00 in the Library of the Gaidar Institute.
In this magnum opus, the author describes the history of moral philosophy as a dynamic process inextricably linked to changing forms of social life and social ideals. MacIntyre demonstrates that moral concepts are not timeless abstractions: they are formed in historical development, from Homer and formation of ancient polis thought, through the Middle Ages, the modern era, and into 20th-century philosophy.
The author emphasizes that history of ethics is not a collection of grand theories, but a living tradition of seeking answers to questions about the good, justice, and the meaningful structure of human life. The book concludes with a practical challenge: the modern reader is faced with the task of critically reflecting on the diversity of moral experience of the past in order to develop adequate guidelines for the present.
