Under a trade deal between the United States and the European Union, the US import tariffs on steel and aluminum could be reduced. Olga Ponomareva, expert at the Economic Policy Foundation, expressed her opinion to RIA Novosti.

"It can be suggested that size of duties on metals will still be reduced to the previous level of 25%. There is a chance that duties will be non- zero within quota and volumes of quotas will be less than supplies of recent years," she said.

The expert also recalled that in 2021 after the first trade war the US and the EU had already concluded an agreement on tariff quotas for steel and aluminum exports. At that time, the duty-free volume amounted to 4.4 mln tons for steel and almost 400.000 tons for aluminum, while duties of 25 and 10% respectively were retained beyond quotas.

Olga Ponomareva suggested that new terms would likely be less favorable for the EU given that the deal would be concluded under President Donald Trump.
