Olga Magomedova on the challenges experienced by Russian meat exporters

Olga Magomedova, Researcher of the International Best Practice Analysis Department at the Gaidar Institute, highlighted main factors contributing to challenges of meat export from Russia in Izvestia publication.

Despite notable success in foreign markets, Russian exporters of meat products still face a number of difficulties, Magomedova says. First of all, they have to overcome the competitive threshold for entering foreign markets. For example, in 2023, Russia ranked among the top 5 countries supplying pork to China, but its share still does not exceed 5%. Russia's food exports need to compete to expand its consumer audience.

Additionally, some countries impose national rules that relate to meat trade. For example, one of the largest importers of meat from Russia is Saudi Arabia. However, supplies to this market require a certificate confirming that the product is halal.
