Maria Girich: US gets out of the Paris climate agreement to boost oil and gas
Maria Girich, Researcher, Best International Practice Analysis Department at the Gaidar Institute, explained in a publication Prime of the economic information agency, why the US gets out of the Paris climate agreement.
Girich noted that this is the second time the US has withdrawn from the Paris agreement. The first time was back in 2020. Furthermore, the US did not participate in the Kyoto Protocol, the predecessor of the Paris agreement. Among the reasons is the stimulation of the oil and gas sector. Trump has already expressed his view that the ban on offshore oil drilling should be lifted, as well as the mandatory use of electric cars.
The expert also noted low efficiency of the Paris agreement. The UN analysis shows that the countries' implementation of their stated contributions to the climate agenda is insufficient to fulfill the goals of the Paris agreement: by 2030, it will not allow to achieve the goal to keeping temperature rise below 2 degrees C. The total emission of greenhouse gases in 2030 considering fulfillment of all national contributions will exceed the target by 18.1 gigatonnes of CO2-equivalent.
