Maria Girich, a Researcher of the International Best Practices Analysis Department at the Gaidar Institute, spoke to RBC on the prospects of the artificial intelligence development, regulation of digital markets and risks of concentration of technological power in the pocket of the largest global companies.
In an interview with the RBC, the expert noted that currently, governments and international organizations are seeking new approaches to regulating digital economy. Among the most pressing issues are taxation of digital platforms, ensuring fair competition in artificial intelligence markets, and preventing the excessive concentration of data, computing power, and technology in a limited number of players.
Maria Girich focused specifically on competition in AI markets. She noted that despite the rapid technological development and numerous new studies, the largest tech companies already evidence a significant strengthening of their positions in cloud computing, AI chips, and digital infrastructure.
"It is important to monitor transactions across the entire supply chain and prevent situations where large tech companies acquire smaller innovative firms for access to their data and technologies. This helps maintain competition and prevent excessive concentration of resources in the artificial intelligence market," noted Maria Girich.
Considering the development of AI in Russia, the expert emphasized that in addition to infrastructure and technology, much will depend on regulatory solutions, particularly on how data processing and development of digital economy are regulated.
