Kirill Chernovol on the rising trend of coking coal supplies from Russia to India
RIA Novosti published a comment by Kirill Chernovol, Researcher, International Best Practices Analysis Department at the Gaidar Institute, on the growing export of Russian coking coal to India.
The expert believes that in the coming months the upward trend in coking coal supplies from Russia to India may continue, given India’s desire to diversify supplies and changes in the global coal market. However, in order to sustainably increase exports, Russia needs to overcome existing logistical and financial barriers, primarily related to sanctions restrictions.
Kirill Chernovol noted that the upward trend in coking coal exports to India may be due, partly, to the fact that India is seeking to diversify the sources of coking coal imports to reduce its dependence on traditional suppliers such as Australia. Furthermore, China imposed a 15% tariff on coal imports from the US, resulting in a redistribution of global coking coal flows. Thus, the US began to redirect its supplies to India, while China increased its purchases from Australia and Canada, causing additional competition in these markets.
