Gaidar Institute experts reported an increase in supplies of goods from Russia to the EU across certain categories

«In 2024, Russia accounted for 91.7% of the European imports of unprocessed nickel. Russia also dominated the supply of nuclear reactors and fuel elements with a share of 72.3%», researchers from the Gaidar Institute’s International Trade Laboratory indicated in the «Monitoring of Russia’s Economic Outlook». The main conclusions of the study were published by TASS.

The share of Russian goods in EU imports remains at an increased level in a number of important commodity categories. <…> Against the background of the general degradation of trade with the EU in a number of major commodity groups, the reduction since pre-sanction 2021 has been minimal, while growth has been observed for some groups.

According to analysts, Russia accounted for 91.7% of European imports of unprocessed nickel in 2024. Russia also dominated the supply of nuclear reactors and fuel elements with a share of 72.3%. In addition, Russian shipments accounted for 44% to 50% of such commodities as pig iron, ferroalloys, semi-finished iron and non-alloy steel products, and rapeseed. In addition, Russian supplies accounted for a quarter to a third of EU imports of mineral and nitrogen fertilizers, ammonia and natural gypsum.

While mineral fuel supplies decreased by 80% in value terms to $24.2 bn and Russia’s share in European imports fell from 27% to 4.7%, Russian LNG supplies totaled $7.8 bn (+28% vs. 2021), maintaining a 20% market share. There was virtually no change in the value of fish shipments — $751 mn (+5%), non-precious metals group — $294 mn (-5%) and sunflower seeds — $272 mn (-7%). Fertilizer shipments also declined slightly to $1.8bn (-14%), while overall market share remained at 26%.
