Evgeniy Goryunov on ruble appreciation

Evgeniy Goryunov, Head of the Monetary Policy Department at the Gaidar Institute, told RB.RU that ruble appreciation is unlikely to last long.

According to the expert, growth of the Russian currency is influenced by possible future negotiations and de-escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, as well as a high key rate. However, in the long term, the ruble exchange rate will weaken. All factors, including the principal one, i.e. growth of money supply, support it.

Evgeniy Goryunov also noted that ruble appreciation is likely to be considered bad news for companies competing with imports, as the competition will intensify. However, it is good news for those who use imported components. On the other hand, a stronger ruble will reduce inflationary pressure, which will allow the Bank of Russia to reduce the interest rate faster, and this will be positive news for business.
