In the context of transformation of global trade, digital technologies become a key factor in the competitiveness of Russian industry. This was explained by Dmitry Kuznetsov, Researcher of the International Trade Department at the Gaidar Institute.
According to the expert, modern technologies allow companies to reduce costs, adapt more quickly to foreign market demands, and more effectively find new customers. The study done by the Department, showed that digitalization contributes not only to export growth but also to its sustainability and diversification.
Dmitry Kuznetsov explained that digital solutions improve enterprise efficiency through automation, digital quality control, and data analysis. This, in turn, makes entering foreign markets economically viable for more companies. ICT equipment imports also play a significant role, driven by technological modernization and increased productivity. On average, the likelihood of such companies starting exports increases by approximately 6 p.p., which, given the low share of exporters in the industry, means a nearly threefold increase in the chances of becoming an exporter. This effect remains after taking into account the company's size, financial position, and previous experience.
The expert also focused on the connection between digitalization and expansion of the geography and range of supplies. Companies investing in technology, increase these indicators by 4-6%, which reduces dependence on market conditions in certain countries. At the national level, the development of paperless trade and digital customs procedures also contributes to a more sustainable and diversified trade structure. The higher the level of digitalization of partners' trade procedures, the easier it is for Russian companies to enter and take a hold in their markets.
Analyzing Rosstat data, experts formulated a digitalization index for industries and regions. As Dmitry Kuznetsov summarized, it demonstrates a consistent positive correlation between industry digitalization and export growth. The effect on regional exports is also positive, but less pronounced, which may be due to the imperfections of foreign trade regional statistics. According to the expert, supporting the implementation of modern ICT solutions, including access to imported equipment and the development of digital trade institutions could significantly expand the export potential of the Russian economy and strengthen its position in the changing global system.
