Dmitry Evdokimov names the reasons for the uneven development of mechanical engineering in Russia

Dmitry Evdokimov, expert of the Gaidar Institute’s Quantitative Analysis of Economic Effects Department, explained in a commentary for Nezavisimaya Gazeta the reasons for the imbalance in the development of mechanical engineering sectors. The Higher School of Economics estimates that from 2021 to 2024, the industrial production index will grow by 35.5%. The volume of own production of machinery and equipment for the same period increased by 80.5% and was at the maximum for the last 10 years.

Dmitry Evdokimov draws attention to the significant unevenness within the machine building industry. «Growth is recorded where investment demand, expansion of the defense order, renewal of industrial equipment and accelerated import substitution in segments that do not require significant investment in R&D dominate," the expert pointed out. In his opinion, the decline is observed in the sectors tied to consumer or export demand — the sectors focused on the end consumer suffer from declining incomes, logistical difficulties and restricted lending.
