The shift of the southern part of Kamchatka by almost 2 m after a powerful earthquake on July 30 will have minimal impact on shipping in the region. This was the opinion expressed to RIA Novosti by
“After a powerful earthquake in Kamchatka, which shifted the southern part of the peninsula by almost 2 m, the impact on shipping and sea routes will be minimal. Navigation parameters, approach depths and vessel routes in the region are controlled to a high precision; modern navigation systems quickly make the necessary adjustments. The surface shift itself does not cause the need for a massive change in sea routes," the expert noted.
Dmitry Evdokimov emphasized that the structure of fishing and cargo lines will remain the same. He believes that only hydrographic maps will require revision in the event of changes in fixed navigation marks and port infrastructure, but this process is standard for such events.
"The economic consequences are mainly related to restoration of damaged infrastructure in the affected areas and will not produce significant disruptions in the regional economy. On the whole, the shift in Kamchatka is noticeable from a geological point of view, but modern technological and insurance tools make it possible to quickly eliminate local consequences for shipping and businesses," the expert said.
