Denis Ternovsky, Expert at the Economic Policy Foundation, commented for «Nezavisimaya Gazeta» on data regarding the decline in alcohol consumption and production in Russia. In his opinion, this trend is influenced by long-term social changes and the current economic situation.
“The decline in alcohol consumption is a long-term trend linked to lifestyle changes and the desire to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle,” the expert noted.
However, in addition to healthy lifestyles, economic factors have a significant impact on the situation. Denis Ternovsky drew attention to the fact that alcoholic beverages are rapidly becoming more expensive. "Alcoholic beverages are one of the leaders in price growth. In October 2025, they rose by 12% compared to October last year, which is significantly higher than the inflation rate. Among all food product groups, only fish and fish products have seen higher price increases. All alcoholic beverages are becoming more expensive, from beer and wine to vodka and cognac. Naturally, as prices rise, production declines,“ he emphasized.
At the same time, the expert pointed to the presence of ”white spots“ in consumption statistics. He wondered, ”Is the decline really due to rising prices, or is it shifting to the unobserved area of home-produced beverages?"
