Antonina Levashenko on joint Russia and Belarus projects

Antonina Levashenko, Head of International Best Practice Analysis Department at the Gaidar Institute, explained in a publication of Rossiyskaya Gazeta why Belarus is actively invested in Russian Arctic infrastructure.

According to the expert, Belarus' interest in construction of new ports in the Arctic and Far East in collaboration with Russia is related to the need to create new logistics routes for exporting goods in view of sanctions.

Meanwhile, Levashenko noted that the idea of building a Belarusian port in Russia is not new. Such a project was first discussed in 2021, when the United States imposed sanctions against Belarusian companies, including Belaruskali, the largest producer of potash mineral fertilizers. Since then, sanctions pressure on Belarus has only increased, and today all Belarusian exports go through Russia without any alternative. Accordingly, successful implementation of infrastructure projects in Russia will help Belarus to cope with growing exports of domestic products.
