AN ARTICLE BY MARIA KANEVA PUBLISHED IN «SCANDINAVIAN JOURNAL OF PUBLIC HEALTH»

The Scandinavian Journal of Public Health published an article by Maria Kaneva, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Leading researcher of the International Research Department of Health Care Economics and Health Care Reform of the Gaidar Institute, co-authored with Christopher Jerry of the University of Oxford.

The article is dedicated to the study of relations between depression and the labor market in Russia. Using data from 2011–2017, the researchers identified the impact of unemployment on mental disorders and examined the underlying mechanism of the observed link.

Due to their research, scientists have concluded that knowing the underlying mechanism linking the adverse labor market outcomes to mental disorders is critical to formulating policies that can eliminate this link. Scientists' findings are the basis for initiating anti-stigma campaigns among employers, politicians and medical practitioners, as well as the general population. Eradicating the concept that mental disorders somehow differ from “real” illnesses will not only prevent Russians from self-selection in the labor market, but can also change obsolete approaches to protection of mental health in Russia.
