On February 7 (Saturday) at 7:00 PM, the Dal philosophical bookstore in St. Petersburg will host a lecture/presentation entitled "The History of Ethics: MacIntyre's View" in collaboration with the Gaidar Institute Press.
In the course of the event, participants will discuss Alasdair MacIntyre's book "A Brief History of Ethics." The author is one of the most significant moral philosophers of the 20th and 21st centuries, known for his critique of modern ethics and defense of the Aristotelian tradition of virtues. In his book, he demonstrates that morality cannot be understood out of historical content: different eras have responded differently to the concept of the human goods and the decent life.
Alasdair MacIntyre traces the development of ethics from antiquity to modern times and argues that classical virtue ethics relied on the notion of the purpose of human life. In the modern era, this connection was lost, and morality began to be justified through duty, utility, or feelings. As a result, modern ethics faces irreconcilable contradictions.
During the meeting, the speaker will explore Alasdair MacIntyre's key ideas, the book's strengths and controversies, as well as its central and secondary plots. On the day of the presentation, attendees will receive a 10% discount on the book.
