ALEXEY VEDEV: WE SHOULD FEAR DEFLATION UNDER SUCH CONSUMER DEMAND

Alexey Vedev, Head of Financial Studies Department of the Gaidar Institute, took part in the round table discussion titled “Economic results of 2019 and forecast for 2020" held on December 19 at the press center of  “Moskovskiy Komsomolets”.
Participating economists assessed achievements and failures in the Russian economy. Guests were equal on the opinion that low inflation was one of the few achievements of the Russian economy. At least, it was not worse than earlier, they concluded.
“I do not consider inflation to be an achievement, under such consumer demand we should be wary of deflation,” said Alexey Vedev in return.
Former Deputy Minister of Economic Development called budget policy a failure of the year. Alexey Vedev asked: "How can you flaunt a budget surplus in a stagnant economy?"
The result of the year, according to experts: the state is doing better than the people. Macroeconomic indicators, low inflation, budget surplus did not positively affect people’s life. Experts do not expect that next year Russians will experience qualitative changes and forecast a very weak growth in real incomes.
