ALEXEI VEDEV TOOK PART IN THE PRESENTATION OF THE UN REPORT ON THE WORLD ECONOMIC SITUATION

On January 19, 2022, Alexei Vedev, Head of the Financial Studies Department, Gaidar Institute took part in the presentation of the World Economic Situation and Prospects, 2021 Report sponsored by the International Union of Economists and the UN Information Center with the Free Economic Society of Russia.

In his speech, Alexei Vedev touched upon the factors which could pose a threat to the Russian economy in 2022. In his view, recurring stagnation is a major risk to the Russian economy. Even a 4.7% GDP growth in 2021 means that average growth rates in 2020-2021 will be below 1%, which is in line with the trajectory of the past decade. Despite an upturn in recovery, financial vulnerability in some economic sectors remains quite high. In 2022, solvency risks will persist both in sectors badly hit by the pandemic (for example, transport and services) and small companies. Further, the corporate sector will find itself in a complicated situation. Solvency risks will remain high for SME and even some large companies.

The presentation was attended by leading Russian and foreign experts and researchers, representatives of Russian and international non-government organizations, state authorities and the mass media.
