The Library on Gazetny examined whether DeFi is a viable alternative to traditional finance.

On June 9, the Gaidar Institute held its fifth public lecture series, "DeFi: A Decentralized Financial System in the World of Cryptocurrency." The event, held at the Library on Gazetny, brought together all those interested in the structure of the cryptocurrency ecosystem and its place in the modern world.

The lecture was delivered by Andrey Zubarev, senior researcher at the Gaidar Institute's Department for Digital Finance. Together with the audience, Andrey Zubarev explored the basic philosophy of DeFi, introduced the main types of applications and explained their operating principles in detail. Andrey Zubarev provided a clear explanation of how key DeFi services operate, including lending protocols and decentralized spot and derivatives exchanges. Special attention was paid to the role of tokens associated with DeFi projects and the current relationship between decentralized and traditional finance.

The main issue of the evening was the following: does decentralized finance (DeFi) truly represent a full-fledged alternative to traditional finance (TradFi)?

The topic generated considerable interest among the audience. Participants took interest in the practical aspects of decentralized platforms, as well as the regulatory and development prospects of DeFi in Russia. The dialogue helped them explore the issue from different perspectives and identify important areas for future meetings.

The Gaidar Institute thanks everyone present for their engagement and insightful discussion.
