Outcomes of discussion of the book “The Great Math War”

On June 15, discussion of the book “The Great Math War: How Three Brilliant Minds Fought for the Foundations of Mathematics” by Jason Socrates Bardi, published by Gaidar Press, took place at the Library on Gazetny.

The event brought together the audience interested in the history of science, philosophy of mathematics, and lives of great 20th-century scientists. The discussion centered on the so-called "crisis in the foundations of mathematics", an episode in the history of intellectual thought, when three outstanding mathematicians proposed three different exits from a methodological impasse.

The discussion was attended by:

  • Fuad Tagievich Aleskerov, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, NSU HSE;
  • Sergey Yurievich Zholkov, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, GUBKIN University;
  • Vladislav Alekseevich Shaposhnikov, Candidate of Philosophical Sciences, Assistant Professor, MSU.

Participants discussed how convincingly Jason Bardi conveyed the intense rivalry between Bertrand Russell, David Hilbert, and Luitzen Egbert Jan Brouwer. This rivalry unfolded not only in scientific papers and departments, but also in the scientists' personal relationships in the context of World War I.

The discussion was lively and insightful. We thank all participants, experts, and the audience for the informative meeting, absorbing questions, and genuine interest in the topic.
