Natalia Antonenko, Researcher at the Quantitative Analysis of Economic Effects Department of the Gaidar Institute, explained why patent activity is an important index for development of cross-cutting technologies. The expert underlined that high patent activity indicates the accumulation of critical competencies, creation of know-how and establishment of technological advances.

To identify the most and least developed areas, the Gaidar Institute experts conducted a comparative assessment of patent coverage using a set of indices. The study resulted in a ranking of cross-cutting technologies for data processing and transmission based on their patent protection.

Among new technologies actively implemented over the past five years, the leaders were:

  1. Big data storage and analysis technologies.
  2. Artificial intelligence.
  3. Geodata and geoinformation technologies.

The following promising technologies whose market is still emerging can be highlighted:

  1. Neuro-technologies and technologies of virtual and augmented reality.
  2. Trusted interaction technologies.
  3. Distributed ledger technologies.

This analysis allows to clearly assess current technological development landscape and identify priority areas for further support in accordance with the Concept of Technological Development until 2030.
