Researcher at the Gaidar Institute's International Best Practices Analysis Department, Maria Girich, commenting for Rossiyskaya Gazeta on data from government report on the state of the environment, highlighted the key harmful substances that most often exceed the norms in the country.

The maximum permissible concentrations of nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and suspended particles are most often exceeded in Russia. These are precisely the emissions that occur during the extraction of minerals and the burning of fuel (both for energy production and in industrial processes)," said Maria Girich.
