Library on Gazetny discussed the novelty published by the Gaidar Institute Press “The Livelihood of Man”

On October 1, Library on Gazetny hosted a presentation and discussion of the book by one of the most original economic thinkers of the 20th century Karl Polanyi "The Livelihood of Man". The event was held within the program of Moscow Book Week Festival.

A book recently published by Gaidar Institute Press has sparked a profound discussion. In his final and, in a sense, culminating work, released posthumously, Polanyi demonstrated that the self-regulating market is not an eternal reality, but rather a historically contingent and inherently unstable experiment. For the greater part of human history, the allocation of resources was implemented by other means rather than through the price mechanism.

Alexander Nikulin, Candidate of Economic Sciences, Director of the Center for Agrarian Studies at RANEPA, Elizaveta Solovyeva, Junior Researcher, PSTGU, Vladimir Mamchenko, Master student at NRU HSE, Emir Galiakhmetov, Master student at RANEPA, discussed during the meeting, what exactly these means were according to Polanyi. Participants of the discussion examined the relevance of Polanyi’s ideas to the modern world and presented various perspectives on his legacy.
