The transfer of payments for Russian coal into national currencies and state subsidies for transportation can become the main factors in restoring demand for this type of fuel in Asian markets in the coming years, Antonina Levashenko, Head of the International Best Practices Analysis Department at the Gaidar Institute, told Prime.

Noting the increased demand for coal in Asian destinations (China, India, South Korea, and Taiwan), the expert emphasized: “In the perspective of 2025-2027, the recovery of demand can be facilitated by the development of dialog with Russian coal importers on the transfer of payments into national currencies, for example, such practice is already applied in the trade processes of Russia and China.”

In addition, Antonina Levashenko estimates that the government-approved government support measures, such as transportation subsidies, will also have a positive impact on demand for Russian coal.
