On June 23, Alexander Knobel, Head of International Trade Department of the Gaidar Institute, delivered a presentation “The impact of coronavirus on trade and investments” in the course of a webinar on the theme: “Global value chains, trade and investments in Russia: what happens after the pandemic?”

In his presentation, Alexander Knobel paid particular attention to the following issues:

  1. Reduction of aggregate supply due to quarantine measures: suspension of business, disruption of the supply chain of intermediate and final goods between countries and national markets, reduction of labor mobility;
  2. Decrease in aggregate demand: decrease in demand for services, durable goods, reduction in international trade;
  3. Increased uncertainty due to the spread of coronavirus;
  4. The fall in prices, first for goods, followed by other investment goods;
  5. Capital outflow from risky assets (strengthening of the US dollar against other currencies).
