On September 11, as part of the Moscow Book Week festival, a discussion of Chinese economist Lan Xiaohuang's book The Visible Hand: The State and Economic Development in China took place at the library of the Gaidar Institute and the Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences (MSSES).
The discussion was attended by:
- Ilya Chubarov, Candidate of Geographical Sciences, scientific editor of the book.
- Denis Kalashnikov, associate professor at the Department of World Economy at MGIMO.
- Vladislav Tarasenko, Candidate of Philosophical Sciences, associate professor at Bauman Moscow State Technical University.
The experts analyzed the mechanism of the Chinese economy described in the book and discussed the interrelationship between macroeconomic trends, central-regional relations, the land and real estate market, public finances, the bureaucratic system, social inequality, the stock market, industrial development, and foreign trade imbalances. The participants also discussed the root causes of serious structural problems in the Chinese economy, their impact on the global economy, possible solutions, and the latest research on these topics.
