Viktor Mazin's book The Influence Machine is written at the intersection of psychoanalysis, media theory and anthropology. The concept of the influence machine originated in the eighteenth century and is embodied in the very beginning of the nineteenth century in the description of James Tilly Mathews – a patient of London Bedlam. The discursive construction of this machine is dictated by political events, scientific discoveries, and the first industrial revolution. The next influence machine, which is explored in detail in the book, is described by a Berlin patient of Viktor Tausk, Natalia A. The Idea of this machine was formed during the second industrial revolution of the early twentieth century. The third machine, the conditions of formation of which are considered by the author, characterizes the beginning of the XXI century. It arises from the transition from analog to digital technologies, from production capitalism to consumer capitalism, from a disciplinary society to a control society.
